Description:

Scarce militia officer's chapeau named to 'Louis E. Vierbeller', constructed of proper Army style fur-felt and ostrich feathers, somewhat following the US Army pattern of 1872 with many divergences. It has a period gross grain bow in front and one black and one white ostrich feather at top. The interior bears the manufacturer's label of: 'Wm. Horstman Company', which is probably the most famous of all US Army/Militia outfitters. The exterior of this chapeau is good with excellent feathers, and velvet trim. The fur-felt is 75% intact, and there is some edge tearing. Interior is good with sweat band missing. There were many thousands of para-military militia organizations during that time period, with the greater majority now unknown. Most of these organizations only had a dozen or so men in their ranks and are so obscure that they will probably never be known. In addition, many old fraternal organizations wore similarly modified US military headgear, further complicating the identification of this cap. A rare and interesting piece worthy of further research.
