Description:

(1912 - 1977) American rocket pioneer who began his career developing the V-1 and V-2 rockets used by the Nazis, and after his arrival in the U.S. he was largely responsible for the Redstone and Saturn rockets, and for the success of NASA as a whole. At lower-right, von Braun signs next to the rocket in bold blue ink, adding an inspirational inscription: 'Pioneer IV which built a (tiny) new planet in our solar system - Wernher von Braun'. The verso of the image is bears a black printed publication line, reading: 'U.S. Army...Ordinance Missile Command...June II - Pioneer IV Launching Vehicle.' Trimmed at the edges, two light creases at bottom edge, negligible tape remnants on the corners of the verso from previous framing. Still very good to fine condition, and suitable for display. Pioneer IV was the first probe of the United States to escape from the Earth's gravity, and was the only successful lunar probe launched by the U.S. in 12 attempts between 1958 and 1963.
