Description:

WWII GERMAN LIGHTNING NEWS PROPAGANDA
Rare relic from the archive of Colonel Rufus Bratton, the Army infantry and intelligence officer whose work as Far East Section Chief of Military Intelligence and actions during the Pearl Harbor attack were fictionalized in the movie Tora Tora Tora: an original issue of the LIGHTNING NEWS, a German propaganda leaflet aimed at demoralizing American troops, dated Oct. 31, 1944 (ten days after American soldiers captured Aachen-- the first German city to fall). The two-page document was infamous for its rhetoric and highly-anticipated for the nude woman always displayed at the top right corner. The Oct. 31st issue ran with the headline, "In spite of victories-- poor chances" and showed a picture of smiling "American" POW troops, with the caption, "These lucky ones have made it, they are now safe in Germany". The LIGHTNING NEWS also ran several articles disparaging Jews and blacks serving in the military, and wondering, "What becomes of our wives and daughters?". And, as always, included a nude woman, this time mixing drinks with a caption below: "Gee, it would be swell to be back home and mix a few cocktails with her." Minor folds and slight soiling and fraying around the edges, very good.
