Excellent original photogravure print, 9 1/4" x 12 1/4", a sepia-toned chest-up frontal portrait of a Native American man by noted photographer Edward S. Curtis. The image is titled at lower left, identifying the subject as "Half-Shorn", with his tribe "Nez Perce". The publishing line "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" appears immediately beneath the image at center. The image is printed on Japanese Vellum paper, with a distinct border left by the edges of the gravure plate. The top edge of the sheet is gilt, indicating that the print was removed from an edition of Curtis' "The North American Indian", Vol. 8, published 1911 by the University Press of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and printed by John Andrews & Son. Shows minute holes at the extreme left edge where disbound, with slight toning to the edges, and the blind-embossed ownership label "University of Oregon Library Eugene, Oregon" at upper right, else very good. EDWARD S. CURTIS (1868 - 1952) was an American photographer of the American West and of Native American peoples. He made over 10,000 wax cylinder recordings of Indian language and music and took over 40,000 photographic images from over 80 tribes.
