A rather unusual original Third Reich photograph, 9" x 6" b/w on period-correct Agfa paper, a view of a group of uniformed pilots and aircrew before their two gliders, as well as their towcar, all on a grass airstrip in front of a wood hangar. Under magnification, it is clear that the caps worn by the pilots bear the "totenkopf" insignia of the SS, indicating that these men are members of the very short-lived "SS-Fliegerstaffel" ("SS-Flying Squad"), most likely SS-Fliegerstaffel Sud based at Oberweisenfeld Airfield in Munich and led by future Luftwaffe general Eduard Ritter von Schleich. The photo shows slight bumps to the edges and minor toning, else very good. The "SS-Fliegerstaffeln" were formed in 1931 and absorbed into the "Deutscher Luftsportverband" ("German Air Sports Association"), or DLV, which was established to provide covert training to Luftwaffe pilots, and was itself replaced by the "Nationalsozialistiches Fliegerkorps" ("National Socialist Flyer's Corps") in 1937.
