FRITZ TODT (1891 - 1942) Nazi military engineer who supervised the building of the Autobahn, the Siegfried Wall and the chain of submarine bases on the coast of France. Died mysteriously in a plane crash. SIX DAYS AFTER THE INVASION OF RUSSIA, TODT ADVISES KEITEL THAT MORE FUNDS MUST BE DIRECTED TOWARD U-BOAT AND AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION Fine content and association T.L.S. on his Reichminister letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Berlin, June 28, 1941, a typed copy of his letter to Field Marshal WILHELM KEITEL, this copy sent for the edification of Gen. GEORG THOMAS. The letter, in German and stamped "REICH SECRET" at top, reads in small part: "...General [Georg] Thomas told me yesterday that the order I passed to the Fuhrer, which I enclose [not present], has aroused your discomfort. Unfortunately, you were not told the context and not the contents of the cover letter...the Army Weapons Office issued the attached guideline, which states that it has only the manufacturing facilities that were released, which was in stark contradiction...the freed up army capacity must be used in addition to the Panzer program of the army for the Luftwaffe and the U-boats...no place needs to obtain a special order...I have agreed with General Thomas, the Luftwaffe program makes it urgently necessary that between you, the Reichsmarshall and I have a meeting in the near future in which we will vote...For a preliminary meeting, General Thomas will meet with you at Fuhrer Headquarters..." At the conclusion, Todt types a note to Thomas indicating that this copy is for his information and boldly signs. Multiple dockets throughout. Marginal file holes, else very good. Gen. GEORG THOMAS (1890–1946) was a leading participant in planning and carrying out economic exploitation of the Soviet Union, most notably the Hunger Plan. At this time, he was In 1939, he headed the Defense Economy and Armament Office in the OKW.
