EDGAR CHENOWETH Congressman from Colorado, T.L.S. “Edgar” on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Apr. 25, 1951 to a friend, in part: “…I think the President made a bad mistake when he removed general MacArthur…It is impossible to impeach the President, as Democrats are in control of Congress…we hope to get to the truth surrounding his untimely dismissal…MacArthur received the greatest ovation ever accorded a returning hero when he appeared before Congress last week…”, with Sen. WILLIAM E. JENNER of Indiana, T.L.S. on Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Apr. 18, 1951. In part: “…No one here questions the technical right of the President to relieve any officer…They question his judgment…[MacArthur] has been removed like a stupid servant…if the civil authorities fail to guard our national security Congress must act…Lenin, Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini, rigidly subordinated the military to political power…we must be sure the political power is not corrupted by hidden traitors…” Two pieces.
