(1906 – 1971) American inventor and television pioneer, considered the "Father of Television". Best known for his 1927 invention of the first fully functional all-electronic image pickup device and the first fully functional television system complete with receiver and camera. Rare, fine association signed book from his library: "Traveling-Wave Tubes" by J. R. Pierce (New York: D. Van Nostrand & Co.), 1950. 260pp. 8vo. in blue cloth with gold title on spine, with slightly-torn dust jacket. Farnsworth has signed the front flyleaf, and his bookplate is affixed to the front paste down. Fine. A traveling-wave tube is a specialized vacuum tube that is used in electronics to amplify radio frequency signals in the microwave range. It belongs to a category of "linear beam" tubes in which the radio wave is amplified by absorbing power from a beam of electrons as it passes down the tube. They are widely used as the power amplifiers and oscillators in radar systems, communication satellite and spacecraft transmitters, and electronic warfare systems.
