(1924 - 2005) American lawyer and jurist who served on the Supreme Court for 33 years, first as an Associate Justice from 1972 to 1986, and then as the 16th Chief Justice. Good content D.S. as Supreme Court Chief Justice, 23pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], the text of the court's decision as delivered by Rehnquist on June 25, 1990 in the case of Nancy Beth Cruzan v. the Director of the Missouri Dept. of Health. Signed by Marshall at the bottom of the first page. Fine. Cruzan had been severely injured in an automobile accident and was on life support with no chance of cognitive recovery. The first "right to die" case ever heard by the Court, in a 5–4 decision, the Court affirmed the earlier ruling of the Supreme Court of Missouri and ruled in favor of the State of Missouri, finding it was acceptable to require "clear and convincing evidence" of a patient's wishes for removal of life support. A significant outcome of the case was the creation of "living wills".
