Description:

ANTI-AXIS BOWLING PINS
Rare and very desirable set of three "King" bowling pins, each 15 1/4" tall, manufactured by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co., and painted with well-executed caricatures of Axis leaders Hideki Tojo, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. Tojo is presented in a particularly derogatory manor, with reptilian eyes and protruding fangs, while Mussolini is given a growth of stubble. Hitler's pin also bears a large painted swastika on the rear. Each pin shows dings, scratches and wear from use and age, else very good. According to our consignor, only about 150 of these pins were created for use at an Indiana bowling alley, of which sisxteen are known to still exist. They were appraised on the Antiques Roadshow at Palm Springs in June of 2008, and are described and depicted in the August 2008 issue of the "Antiques Roadshow Insider" newsletter. Identical examples appear in the documentary "The League of Ordinary Gentlemen", a history of bowling.
