Description:

"AXIS VERSUS ALLIES" CHESS SET
Good set of 32 glazed terra-cotta chess pieces, 5 1/2" tall and smaller, with each side representing figures of the Allies and Axis during World War II. For the Allies, the king and queen are represented by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, respectively, while the bishops are Russian soldiers, the knights American jeeps, and the castles the U.S. Capitol dome. The pawns display an American star roundel. For the Axis, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini represent the king and queen, respectively, while Japanese soldiers are bishops, the knights German tanks, and the castles an unknown rock formation with a trapezoidal monument at its peak. The pawns, naturally, are swastikas. The Allied pieces are glazed blue-green, while the Axis are glazed brown-grey. The exact origin and maker of these pieces are unknown, but they are certainly contemporary with the war, and two pawns are marked "M" on the base. Many pieces bear easily removed adhesive residue on the base, else very good to fine. Sold with a modern chessboard for display.
