Description:

CHILD SLAVE SHACKLES Extremely rare hand-forged slave foot shackle, ca. 1780's - 1810, designed for use on a child between one and five years of age. American slave dealers placed a premium on child and teen-age enslaved Africans. Although various shackles for adult slaves are commonly seen, those used on children are seldom offered. De-accessioned from the Slave Relics Museum in Walterboro, South Carolina and accompanied by a letter confirming the sale and describing the item. According to the Museum, there are less than ten types of children shackles known in any private or public museum collection. Lightly rusting as expected, otherwise intact.
