Description:

NAVY DAY 1941 POSTER
Incredibly rare original U.S. Navy poster, 28" x 42", an advertisement for Navy Day in 1941, shortly before the American entry into World War II. The poster features an impressive offset lithograph image of a flag-bedecked battleship at the head of a column, flanked by a submarine and with aircraft overhead, over the title "Navy Day October 27th", and the caption "In the air, on the surface, and under the seam the Navy maintains the traditions on which it was founded. It will ever be Our First Line of Defense." The artist''s name "Matt Murphey USN" appears at the right edge, and the bottom edge bears the printing limitation "NRB-30133-9-11-41-23000", indicating that it was printed on Sep. 11, 1941 in an edition of 23,000. A slightly smaller version was also released on Oct. 15 of 1941 in an edition of three million. The poster is mounted on a vintage linen, and shows a chip to the bottom edge, with minute pin holes to the corners and one affecting the image, with scattered crackling to the image, else very good.
