Description:

REICH MINISTRY OF AVIATION "HONOR HALL" DESIGN PROPOSAL PRINTS
Excellent set of four original architectural prints, each depicting what appear to be proposed designs for elements of the "Ehrensaal" ("Honor Hall") within the Berlin headquarters of the "Reichsluftfahrtministerium" ("Reich Ministry of Aviation"), or RLM. Includes: architectural interior elevation print, 46 1/2" x 39 1/4", depicting a massive stone frieze at the head of the "Ehrensaal". The design is dominated by an immense national eagle and swastika, surrounded on all sides by somewhat indistinctly-sketched human figures in various poses of worship and supplication. The central frieze is flanked on both sides by double doors, each inlaid with swastikas and Germanic crosses. The image is labeled "Der Saal Im RLM" ("The Hall in RLM") at bottom; no other markings are present. Shows light folds, else very good. Interestingly, and surprisingly for NSDAP architecture, the final design for the "Ehrensaal" would show some restraint in comparison with this proposed vision, eliminating the human figures around the eagle. WITH: architectural interior print, 46 1/2" x 39 1/4", a depiction of the proposed ceiling design for the "Ehrensaal", with entrances and windows denoted around the outside edge. The design is likewise labeled "Der Saal Im RLM" at bottom, adding "Decke" ("ceiling") and "M. (''scale'') 1:50". No other marks are present. Shows a small hole away from the image, else very good. WITH: architectural interior elevation print, 46 1/2" x 39 1/4", a depiction of the right-hand wall of the "Ehrensaal", featuring three sets of two double doors, each set flanked by flag holders. The doors themselves are inlaid with swastikas and Germanic crosses. The bottom edge again bears the label "Der Saal Im RLM", with the scale "M. 1:50". Shows light folds with some charcoal soiling, else very good. WITH: architectural interior elevation print, 46 1/2" x 39 1/4", a depiction of the left-hand wall of the "Ehrensaal", with eight sets of floor-to-ceiling windows, interspersed with flag holders. The image is once again labeled "Der Saal Im RLM", with the scale "M. 1:50". Light folds, else very good. Four pieces. The RLM building, located on the Wilhelmstrasse in central Berlin, was constructed between February 1935 and August 1936, following a design by Ernst Sagebiel, who completed numerous other projects for the Luftwaffe, including the modernization of Tempelhof Airport. It was one of the few public buildings in Berlin to escape serious damage during World War II, and its ceremonial hall hosted the founding of the German Democratic Republic, which utilized it as a governmental center. The building is now known as the "Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus". It appears that the design presented here would have been installed in the space now occupied by a porcelain tile mural designed by Max Lingner, depicting the Socialist ideal of contented East Germans facing a bright future.
