ROBERT MORRIS (1734 - 1806) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, financier and politician. Morris was instrumental in the financing of Washington's armies, and was later financially ruined through his speculation in western lands. War-date, superb content A.L.S. as Superintendent of Finance for the Continental Congress, 1p., 4to, Philadelphia, June 19, 1781, to Mr. John Hudson of Baltimore concerning overdue bills. In part: "...I am exceedingly mortified to find by your letter of the 13th last that the money was not paid for freight of W Harrison's goods, & sorry I did not satisfy the demand here since dependence cannot be had where I had placed it...". Boldly signed "Your Obedient and Faithful Servant, Robt Morris". An excellent example of Morris' difficult role as "Financier" and Superintendent of Finance and Marine during 1781, a war year of absolute fiscal crisis for revolutionary America.
